What Actually Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session? (A Step-by-Step Walkthrough)

Hello, and welcome back! I'm Talib Kerns, a certified master hypnotist and proud student at HMI. If you've ever been curious about hypnotherapy but felt nervous or uncertain about what to expect, you're not alone. One of the most common questions I hear is: "What actually happens in a session?"


Today, I'm pulling back the curtain to walk you through a typical hypnotherapy session—step by step—so you can feel informed, comfortable, and empowered before you ever walk through the door. What Actually Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session? (A Step-by-Step Walkthrough)



Step 1: The Intake & Goal-Setting Conversation

Every session begins before any hypnosis takes place. At the start, I'll invite you to sit comfortably and share what brought you here. This is your time to explain what you're hoping to achieve, express any concerns, and ask questions.

During this conversation, we explore:

  • Your primary goal (whether it's reducing stress, building better habits, or understanding yourself more deeply)

  • Your medical history and any relevant context

  • What you've already tried and what's worked or hasn't worked


This is also when I assess your suggestibility type—a concept developed by Dr. John Kappas at HMI. Understanding whether you're emotionally or physically suggestible helps me tailor the session to how your mind best receives and processes information.



Step 2: The Installation Phase

Once we've clarified your goals, we move into the installation phase, where you'll be placed in a comfortable seated or semi-recumbent position. I'll guide you to relax and settle into the space.


This phase is all about creating a sense of safety and readiness. There's no "magic" here—just a calm, supportive environment where your nervous system can begin to shift from "doing" to "receiving."



Step 3: Hypnotic Induction

The induction is the process of guiding you into a state of inner focus and deep relaxation. Contrary to popular belief, you're not asleep or unconscious—you're in a state of heightened awareness and receptivity.

During induction, I'll ask you to focus on a single perception: an image, a sound, a physical sensation, or the rhythm of your breath. Through gentle, repetitive verbal suggestions, you'll begin to let go of external distractions and enter what's called a dissociative state—a natural shift where your awareness turns inward.

Think of it like getting lost in a good book or a movie. You're still aware of your surroundings, but your conscious mind steps aside, allowing your subconscious to come forward.



Step 4: The Trance State & Therapeutic Work

This is the heart of the session. Once you're in a comfortable trance state, you enter a state of "perceptual awareness" where the work of transformation happens.

In this state, your subconscious mind is highly receptive to positive suggestions and imagery. Depending on your goal, I might guide you to:


  • Reframe a limiting belief ("I am not enough" becomes "I am capable and worthy")

  • Visualize positive change (imagining yourself responding differently to situations)

  • Revisit and reframe your relationship to an emotional memory that may be connected to current patterns

  • Anchor a resource (creating a physical cue, like touching your thumb and finger, that instantly brings you back to a state of calm)


The trance state is also where we explore Body Syndromes—the concept that physical sensations can be connected to emotional patterns. By accessing the subconscious, we can explore the connection between emotional patterns and physical sensations, opening the door to new ways of responding.



Step 5: Reorientation (Awakening)

When the therapeutic work is complete, I'll begin guiding you back to full waking consciousness using positive, wellness-focused post-hypnotic suggestions. You'll feel gradually more alert, refreshed, and grounded.

This phase is gentle and unhurried. There's no sudden "snapping out of it"—just a smooth return to your ordinary state of awareness, often feeling more relaxed than when you arrived.



Step 6: The End-of-Session Interview

After you're fully awake, we take time to talk about your experience. I'll ask:

  • How did that feel for you?

  • What did you notice in your body or mind?

  • Do you have any questions or reflections?


This debrief is valuable for both of us. It helps me understand what worked best for you and how to adapt future sessions to your unique needs.



Step 7: Self-Hypnosis Instructions

One of my core beliefs—and a cornerstone of the Kappasinian approach—is that sustainable change is possible. That's why I always provide instructions for self-hypnosis before you leave.

I'll teach you simple techniques you can practice at home to reinforce the changes we've explored. This empowers you to take ownership of your mental and emotional well-being long after our session ends.



What Hypnotherapy Is Not

Let me clear up a few myths:

  • You are not asleep. You're aware, present, and in control at all times.

  • You cannot be made to do anything against your will. Your subconscious mind has its own protective mechanisms and will only accept suggestions that align with your values.

  • It's not "mind control." It's a collaborative partnership between you and your subconscious.
